Responding promptly to a safeguarding concern/allegation

1. Concern/allegation arises

  • You suspect or witness abuse, or someone discloses to you information about a safeguarding concern or allegation.

2a. Emergency - Immediate

  • If a child or adult is in immediate danger or requires medical attention, you should call the Police and/or Social Services immediately on 999.
  • Record and report all information to the Rector and/or Parish Safeguarding Officer (PSO).

OR

2b. Non-emergency - Within 24 hours

  • Record and report to the Rector, Parish Safeguarding Officer (PSO) or activity leader.
  • Agree who will inform the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor (DSA).

3. Follow-up within 24 hours by Rector or PSO

  • Record and discuss with the DSA within 24 hours.
  • The DSA will provide advice and guidance.

4a. No longer have concerns

  • If there are no longer any safeguarding concerns, then record no further action / church support offer, and ensure that the Rector and PSO are informed.

OR

4b. On-going concerns about a child or adult

  • The concern/allegation will need to be referred to the Child/Adult Social Care team and/or the Police.
  • Further steps are detailed in Section 7 of the Parish Safeguarding Handbook.

OR

4c. On-going concerns about a church officer

  • The DSA will refer the concern/allegation to the Local Authority Designated Officer and/or the Police.
  • Further steps are detailed in Section 7 of the Parish Safeguarding Handbook.
